Pay attention to warning lights!

Foxed by the warning lights that flash up on your dashboard? Wonder what they really mean? We’ve put together a comprehensive guide to tell us exactly what those graphic symbols actually mean, and the action you need to take if or when you see them.

oilOil pressure warning light

This light should illuminate when the ignition is switched on and should extinguish as soon as the engine starts. If the light stays on after starting or illuminates during a journey, stop immediately, switch off the engine and check the engine oil level. If you have the correct oil suitable for your engine you could top up but do not over fill.

If the warning lamp illuminates, even though the oil level is correct, do not start the engine as this could cause serious engine damage.

batteryBattery charge warning light

This light should illuminate when the ignition is switched on and should extinguish as soon as the engine starts. If it does not illuminate at all, or if it illuminates while driving, your battery is not being charged as there is a fault with your charging system.

brakeBrake system warning light

This light will remain illuminated when the handbrake is engaged. Illumination after releasing the handbrake may indicate low brake fluid level.

After the correct level of brake fluid is applied & light is still on this may indicate a sensor fault or brake pad wear.

engineEngine warning light

Illuminates when the ignition is switched on. It should extinguish as soon as the engine starts.

If it flashes when driving, reduce the vehicle speed immediately until the light illuminates constantly. If it continues to flash, avoid heavy acceleration and high engine speed, stop the vehicle and have it checked as soon as possible by Bw Autos as soon as possible to avoid any further damage.

absABS warning light

When the ignition is switched on, the light illuminates briefly to confirm that the system is operational.
